We began our first science unit with a quick look at some rocks – three unknown specimens.  For this first lesson, we simply made observations.

In our continuing lessons, we were able to classify 12 different rock types into categories of our choice, based on texture, color, size, smell, or whatever our groups decided.

What’s the difference between rocks and minerals?  It was soon time to find out the answer to that question and to discuss the rock cycle.  Twelve minerals were carted out for in-depth observation.
